English idiom: “diggin’ his/her chili”
“Man did you see that girl? She was totally diggin’ your chili.”
We all know that in a world where there is too much formality in speech, there will always creep in a little slang. This phrase is slang that is used to express interest in another person. Chili is a food that has many different meanings worldwide. In this case it is referring to ‘chili con carne’ or ‘chili with meat’. When it comes to the story of chili, tales and myths abound. Many food historians agree that chili con carne is an American dish with Mexican roots, however Mexicans are said to indignantly deny any association with the dish.
To ‘dig’ something is slang for understanding, approve of, or enjoy something. Instead of saying a simple “yes” you can use the response “I dig” or “I dig it”. But this term is more commonly used to imply a strong sense of enjoyment in something. For example, “I am digging this great weather we are having”.
This phrase taken literally makes absolutely no sense, but can be used to sound funny and build comradery with your friends. If it is too hard to find a circumstance to use this, instead of saying yes to something try using “I dig it”!
